Primal pursuit

Lems – Men’s Primal Pursuit Mid Waterproof

Like the Primal Pursuit, the mid-top version is built on Lems “Wide” Natural Shape Last’, which isn’t their “Widest” last but should still fit Correct Toes for most people. They’re zero-drop, so they have no heel elevation; however, they do have a slight toe spring. The 14 mm outsole comes with a 4.5 mm moisture-wicking cushioned insole. The relatively thicker outsole and structured nature of the mid-top upper limit mobility and flexibility are noticeably compared to other barefoot shoes. Similarly, proprioceptive abilities are diminished by the thickness of the sole and cushion, but that can be helpful on rugged terrain.

The structured nature of the shoe makes it very accessible to people who might be used to more supportive footwear and are in the beginning stages of strengthening their feet. For those who are used to more minimal footwear, this shoe will feel protective but possibly restrictive.

altra boa

Altra – Men’s Mont Blanc BOA

The Mont Blanc BOA from Altra is a lightweight long-distance trail running shoe with a dual-dial BOA Fit System that allows for a truly personalized fit. Built on the Altra “Standard Fit” last, the Mont Blanc BOA provides plenty of room for toe splay during your run. These trail runners are zero-drop, so there’s no heel elevation, but they do have a toe spring in the front. The stack height sits at about 30 mm with plenty of cushioning, so you won’t feel any rocks, sticks, bumps, or cracks in the ground —however, the shoe gives a lot of reaction and a nice pop to your run.

The upper is thin and light, complete with a BOA lacing system that allows you to quickly dial in a perfect fit. You can snug them up for downhill running, then quickly release them for a looser fit on the flats. What stands out most about this shoe is its lightweight and the customized fit capabilities (BOA Fit System) combined into such a technical shoe.

escalanate racer

Altra Escalante Racer – Men’s

Just like the Escalante, but a little bit thinner and a little bit lighter. The Altra Escalante Racer has a foot-shaped toe box wide enough to fit Correct Toes for most feet.

The sole is flat with a slightly beveled toe spring but is zero-drop, so there’s no heel elevation. Compared to most cushioned road running shoes, the Escalante Racer is pretty flexible in all directions. The 22 mm stack height of the Escalante Racer is 2 mm less than the Escalante but is still pretty substantial compared to other shoes in the natural footwear realm. And cushioning will obviously dampen sensory perception and proprioception compared to something more firm.

The lightweight Altra Escalante Racer (6.8 oz) also has a super breathable mesh upper, while the regular Escalante (9.5 oz) comes with a more robust sock-like engineered knit upper. The Escalante Racer probably has the lowest stack height and is the most lightweight and flexible of the current Altra footwear.
