Sever’s Disease
Also known as Calcaneal Apophysitis, a common heel problem affecting children.
Cause
Sever’s is largely idiopathic, and is particularly prevalent in active children undergoing rapid growth spurts between 8 and 15 yrs old.
Signs and Symptoms
The most common signs and symptoms associated with Sever’s disease include:
- Heel pain or tenderness, typically at the back of the heel
- Pain or discomfort with activity, or when the heel is squeezed
- Heel swelling or redness
- Decreased ankle range of motion
Recovery
Sever’s Disease will recover without intervention as muscle and tendon growth catch up to periods of rapid bone growth. Symptoms may be managed with occasional cool therapy or oral medications as prescribed by a physician.
