Wide Toe Box Shoe Reviews

On an ongoing basis we review shoes that align with our mission and values in an effort to guide our customers to the best Correct Toes compatible footwear that is available. We judge the shoes based on how wide their toe box is, how flat the footbed is, the amount that the shoe is allowed to flex with your foot as you step, and the ability to sense the ground through the sole.

Women's Xero Shoes I Gracie

Women’s Xero Shoes I Gracie | Correct Toes Approved

Like all Xeros, the Gracie has a wide toe box and has ample room for the toes to splay. However, we found the Gracie to be a little snug while wearing Correct Toes due to the waterproof rubber. People with more narrow or low-volume feet will be more likely to comfortably fit Correct Toes in the Gracie compared to those with wider feet. Correct Toes that have been modified by trimming the 5th toe spacer are also more likely to fit than unmodified Correct toes.

These rain boots are completely flat, without unnecessary heel elevation or toe spring, and have a stack height of 5 mm plus a 3.5 mm removable insole. Xero Gracies are also one of the more flexible rain boots available, which helps to encourage natural foot movement. Although the rubber should soften over time, our tester observed the boot creasing across the tops of the toes, causing some mild pinching discomfort.

SOM

SOM – Men’s HiLite in Black

Handmade in Colorado, Sense of Motion Footwear is designed with foot health in mind. The HiLite is SOM’s do-it-all mid-top shoe with a water-repellent, abrasion-resistant, breathable, quick-drying upper.

The rounded toe box is wide enough to fit Correct Toes for most people. They’re completely flat, with zero heel elevation and no toe spring. The 8 mm thick sole is protective, yet flexible, with a very flexible upper. One might consider these lightweight active shoes to be right on the line between a minimal sole and a transition shoe, making the HiLite a great footwear option for virtually everyone.

haze-trainer-anatomical-crosstraining-shoe-navy-grey-army_1024x

Strike Movement Haze Trainer

The Strike Movement Haze Trainer is a versatile cross-trainer. The toe box is wider than most conventional brands but not as wide as many of the natural footwear brands. With the insole removed we were able to fit a modified pair of Correct Toes comfortably, but it was pretty snug otherwise.

The Haze Trainer has a 4 mm drop for a total of 14.5 mm stack height at the heel. Zero-drop is the healthier option for most situations, but a minor heel elevation can at times be helpful for people with limited ankle dorsiflexion and Achilles pain.

The forefoot stack height is10.5 mm, which is thicker than most “barefoot” shoes but thinner than a lot of cushioned running shoes like Altra. This allows for a little ground-feel while still providing substantial protection and some support.

Feelgrounds – Unisex Chelsea

Our favorite pairs of natural footwear this winter are the Chelsea Boots from Feelgrounds. They have a wide, anatomically-shaped toe box that should comfortably fit Correct Toes for most people. The stack height is10 mm with a completely flat sole — no heel elevation or toe spring. These boots are moderately flexible overall but very flexible for a boot and have no arch support, which helps to allow for a more natural foot motion and posture.

The grippy tread on Feelgrounds Chelsea Boots is great for urban environments. The elastic ankle piece and convenient finger loop at the heel allow you to slip on the barefoot boots effortlessly without compromising style. With their velvety microfiber lining and soft, water-resistant vegan leather, the Feelgrounds Chelsea boots are your high-quality minimalist boots for every day.

Primal pursuit

Lems – Men’s Primal Pursuit Mid Waterproof

Like the Primal Pursuit, the mid-top version is built on Lems “Wide” Natural Shape Last’, which isn’t their “Widest” last but should still fit Correct Toes for most people. They’re zero-drop, so they have no heel elevation; however, they do have a slight toe spring. The 14 mm outsole comes with a 4.5 mm moisture-wicking cushioned insole. The relatively thicker outsole and structured nature of the mid-top upper limit mobility and flexibility are noticeably compared to other barefoot shoes. Similarly, proprioceptive abilities are diminished by the thickness of the sole and cushion, but that can be helpful on rugged terrain.

The structured nature of the shoe makes it very accessible to people who might be used to more supportive footwear and are in the beginning stages of strengthening their feet. For those who are used to more minimal footwear, this shoe will feel protective but possibly restrictive.
